Fortress Terneuzen : West batardeau, before 1904.
This is the West batardeau near de gorge of Bastion IX and was part of
the Front VIII-IX across the Terneuzen-Gent Canal. This batardeau seperated
the canal and the fortress moat with over it an access bridge. The
crenelated wall served to enfilade the fortress moat. To the right Bastion
IX. The largely intact fortifications of Front VIII-IX including this batardeau were demolished only in the 1960s to make way
the enlargement of the
complex of locks for the canal. Nowadays only the name "Brasserie De Westbeer" at this
location reminds of the disappeared batardeau, and has the area changed
beyond recognition.
